2009 Service Week Results

The 2009 “OHSAA Foundation Service Week” took place from Wednesday, November 18 through Saturday, December 5, 2009 in the sport of basketball.  Over 300 high schools participated in over 175 events around the state.  With the support of fans, to date over $165,000 was raised for charitable organizations across Ohio.  Not only were dollars raised, Ohio schools collected toys, clothing and over 60,000 lbs of food for local food pantries and churches.

Of the nearly $240,000 that was raised $150,000 went to charitable organizations and causes across the state as selected by participating schools and $90,000 was raised for the OHSAA Foundation. Contributions to the OHSAA Foundation are returned to all OHSAA member schools in the form of scholarships, leadership conferences and educational materials for student-athletes in all sports. The OHSAA Foundation annually awards $30,000 in scholarships and hosts six leadership conferences at no cost to member schools.  OHSAA member schools raised money for a wide variety of charities including, but not limited to, the following:

Adopt -A -Family Cystic Fibrosis
American Cancer Society Hoopin For Hope Foundation
American Diabetes Association Make a Wish Foundation
American Red Cross Relay For Life
Big Brothers Big Sisters Suicide Prevention
Central Ohio Down Syndrome Society Various scholarship funds

Also making valuable contributions were over 400 licensed OHSAA basketball officials who donated their time.  In addition, Ohio student-athletes actively performed service in their communities such as working in local food pantries, tutoring elementary school students, mentoring programs, visiting nursing homes/ senior centers during the holidays, working with athletes at the Special Olympics, basketball clinics for youth players, community clean-ups and adopting a family for the holidays.

My hope is that my young men will develop a heart for service. Last year, we adopted a theme, "Leadership through Service." Leaders "serve" their teams, not the other way around,” stated David Close, Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Stow-Munroe Falls.

A special thanks to all of our participating schools for their outstanding efforts to make a difference in their respective communities!
